Active & Passive Voice: The Reliable Conversion Formula

Namaste, future teachers! Agar Voice change ki sirf yeh baat samajh lo ki jo karta hai (doer/subject) aur jis par kaam hota hai (object) — inki seat exchange ho jaati hai, toh aadha kaam ho gaya. Active & Passive Voice PGT, TGT, KVS, LT-grade aur UGC-NET — har exam mein guaranteed marks dene wala topic hai. Yahaan na koi tukka chalta hai, na koi exception ka jungle. Bas ek reliable formula hai, jo aaj hum step-by-step pakka kar lenge. Tension mat lo — by the end of this article, aap blindfold karke bhi voice change kar paoge.

What Exactly Is Voice?

Voice batata hai ki subject action kar raha hai ya action subject par ho raha hai. Active Voice mein focus doer par hota hai; Passive Voice mein focus action aur receiver par. Dono grammatically correct hote hain — sirf emphasis badalta hai.

  • Active: Rahul writes a letter. (Subject Rahul = doer)
  • Passive: A letter is written by Rahul. (Object 'letter' aage aa gaya)

Yaad rakho — sirf transitive verbs (jinka object hota hai) ko hi passive banaya ja sakta hai. He sleeps ya She arrived — inka passive nahi banta, kyunki yahaan object hi nahi hai.

The 3-Step Reliable Conversion Formula

Voice change ke liye sirf 3 steps yaad rakho — har baar, har tense mein:

  1. Object ko Subject banao (sentence ki shuruaat mein lao).
  2. Verb badlo: hamesha (correct form of 'be') + Verb ki 3rd form (Past Participle).
  3. Subject ko 'by + object' banao (sentence ke end mein).

Pronouns yahaan badalte hain: I→by me, we→by us, he→by him, she→by her, they→by them, you→by you. Yeh chhoti si galti exam mein marks le jaati hai!

📝 Example Active: She is cooking dinner. → Step 1: dinner aage; Step 2: 'is' + cooking ki 3rd form = is being cooked; Step 3: by her.
Passive: Dinner is being cooked by her. Perfect!

Tense-wise 'Be' Form — The Master Table

Sabse important: kis tense mein 'be' ka kaun-sa roop lagega. Ise rata mat — pattern samjho (V3 = Verb ki 3rd form):

  • Present Indefinite: is/am/are + V3 — Books are read.
  • Present Continuous: is/am/are being + V3 — A song is being sung.
  • Present Perfect: has/have been + V3 — The work has been done.
  • Past Indefinite: was/were + V3 — A letter was written.
  • Past Continuous: was/were being + V3 — The car was being washed.
  • Past Perfect: had been + V3 — The match had been won.
  • Future Indefinite: will be + V3 — The house will be built.
  • Future Perfect: will have been + V3 — The task will have been finished.

Notice karo: Future Continuous aur Perfect Continuous tenses ka passive normally nahi banaya jaata — exam mein inhe leave kar dena hi safe hai.

Special Cases You Must Master

Yeh wahi spots hain jahaan paper setter trap lagata hai:

  • Imperative Sentences (orders/requests): Open the door.Let the door be opened. | Help the poor.Let the poor be helped.
  • Modals (can, may, must, should): structure = modal + be + V3. You must finish it.It must be finished (by you).
  • Questions: Did she break the cup?Was the cup broken by her? | Who wrote this?By whom was this written?
  • Verbs with two objects: He gave me a pen.I was given a pen by him. (person ko subject banana zyada natural hota hai).

Aur ek classy point — agar doer general ho (people, somebody, one), toh 'by' wala part hata do: People speak English here.English is spoken here.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
  • Verb ki 3rd form bhoolna: 'is wrote' galat, is written sahi.
  • Continuous tense mein 'being' chhod dena: 'is washed' (galat for ongoing) — is being washed sahi.
  • Pronoun ka object roop na lagana: 'by he' galat, by him sahi.
  • Intransitive verb ka passive banane ki koshish — He laughed ka koi passive nahi hota.

Quick Exam Strategy

Exam mein pehle tense pehchano, fir object dhundo, fir 'be + V3' fit karo. 10 sentences roz practice karo — ek hafte mein yeh topic aapka pakka scoring zone ban jaayega.

⚡ Quick Revision
  • Formula: Object → Subject | be + V3 | Subject → by + object.
  • 'Be' form = tense + number par depend karta hai (is/are/was/were/been/being).
  • Continuous = being + V3; Perfect = been + V3.
  • Modals = modal + be + V3.
  • Imperative = Let + object + be + V3.
  • Sirf transitive verbs ka passive banta hai; general doer ho toh 'by' drop kar do.

Keep practising, aur har sentence ko formula se cross-check karo. Yeh topic ek baar pakka ho gaya toh exam mein 2-4 marks pakke! All the best, future educators. 🙏
