Figures of Speech: Spot Them in Seconds

Figures of speech language ko effect dete hain. PGT/TGT literature aur poetry questions me inhe pehchanna zaroori hai. Definition + ek pakka example yaad rakho.

1. Comparison figures

  • Simile — "like/as" se tulna: as brave as a lion.
  • Metaphor — direct tulna (bina like/as): He is a lion in battle.
  • Personification — cheezon ko insani gun: The wind whispered.

2. Sound figures

  • Alliteration — same starting sound: wild and windy.
  • Onomatopoeia — sound words: buzz, hiss, clang.

3. Meaning figures

  • Hyperbole — exaggeration: I’ve told you a million times.
  • Oxymoron — opposite words together: deafening silence.
  • Metonymy — name swap: The crown will decide (= the king).
📝 Example"Life is a journey." → No "like/as", direct comparison → Metaphor (a simile would say "Life is like a journey").
⚠️ Common Mistakes
  • Simile = WITH like/as; Metaphor = WITHOUT. Sabse common confusion.
  • Personification = lifeless cheez ko human action.
  • Hyperbole exaggeration hai, jhooth nahi — effect ke liye.
⚡ Quick RevisionSimile(like/as), Metaphor(direct), Personification(human traits), Alliteration(sound), Hyperbole(exaggeration), Oxymoron(opposites). One example each = exam-ready.
