Direct & Indirect Speech (Narration) Made Easy

Hello dear aspirants! Narration yaani Direct & Indirect Speech — bahut students ise dekhte hi ghabra jaate hain, par sach maano, yeh topic bilkul logical hai. Jab koi kisi ki baat hu-ba-hu inverted commas mein bole, woh Direct Speech; aur jab usi baat ko apne shabdon mein report kare, woh Indirect (Reported) Speech. PGT, TGT, KVS, LT aur UGC-NET — sab mein yeh regular feature hai. Aaj hum chhote-chhote rules ko itna saral bana denge ki narration aapke liye 'made easy' ho jaaye. Chaliye shuru karte hain! 😊

The Two Parts of Every Sentence

Har narration sentence ke do hisse hote hain:

  • Reporting Verb + Reporting Subject: jaise He said, She told me — yeh inverted commas ke bahar hota hai.
  • Reported Speech: inverted commas ke andar wali asli baat — "I am busy."

Direct se Indirect banate waqt hum inverted commas hata kar, ek conjunction jodte hain, aur andar wale tense, pronoun aur time-words ko adjust karte hain. Bas yahi pura khel hai!

📝 Example Direct: Rahul said, "I am happy."
Indirect: Rahul said that he was happy.
Dekha? Commas gaye, 'that' aaya, 'I→he', 'am→was'. Simple!

Rule 1: Change the Pronouns (SON Rule)

Pronouns ko ek aasaan trick se badlo — SON:

  • Subject of reporting verb ke according First Person (I, we, my) badalta hai.
  • Object of reporting verb ke according Second Person (you, your) badalta hai.
  • No change for Third Person (he, she, it, they).

He said to me, "You are my friend."He told me that I was his friend. ('you'→'I' object ke hisaab se, 'my'→'his' subject ke hisaab se).

Rule 2: Change the Tense (Backshift)

Agar reporting verb Past tense mein hai (said, told), toh reported speech ka tense ek step peeche chala jaata hai:

  • Present Indefinite → Past Indefinite (write → wrote)
  • Present Continuous → Past Continuous (is going → was going)
  • Present Perfect → Past Perfect (has done → had done)
  • Past Indefinite → Past Perfect (went → had gone)
  • will → would, can → could, may → might, must → had to

Important exception: agar reporting verb Present ya Future ho (says, will say), toh tense bilkul nahi badalta — sirf pronoun adjust hota hai. Aur universal truths kabhi backshift nahi hote: The teacher said, "The sun rises in the east."The teacher said that the sun rises in the east.

Rule 3: Change Time & Place Words

Yeh chhoti-chhoti words exam mein bade marks dilati hain — yaad rakho:

  • now → then | today → that day | tonight → that night
  • tomorrow → the next day | yesterday → the previous day
  • here → there | this → that | these → those
  • ago → before | thus → so | come → go

Rule 4: Sentence Type — Conjunction Badlo

Reported speech ke prakaar ke hisaab se reporting verb aur connector badalta hai:

  • Assertive (statement): said/told + that. He said, "I am tired."He said that he was tired.
  • Interrogative (question): said → asked; 'that' nahi. Wh-word ho toh wahi connector banta hai; Yes/No question ho toh if/whether. Question, statement ke order mein likha jaata hai (no '?'). He said, "Where do you live?"He asked where I lived. | She said, "Are you ready?"She asked if I was ready.
  • Imperative (order/request/advice): said → ordered / requested / advised / told; verb ke aage to (negative ho toh not to). He said, "Open the door."He ordered me to open the door. | "Don't be late,"He told me not to be late.
  • Exclamatory/Optative: said → exclaimed with joy / sorrow, prayed, wished. She said, "Hurrah! We won!"She exclaimed with joy that they had won.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
  • Question ko Indirect karte waqt helping verb aage rakhna — galat: asked where did I live; sahi: asked where I lived.
  • 'said to' ko Indirect mein 'told' mein na badalna — He said to meHe told me.
  • Universal truth ka tense badal dena — yeh kabhi backshift nahi hota.
  • Imperative mein 'to' bhoolna, ya question mark/exclamation mark Indirect mein chhod dena.
  • 'must' ka blanket change — obligation ho toh had to, par 'must' universal/general ho toh same rah sakta hai.

A Full Worked Example

Direct: The teacher said to the boys, "Don't make a noise here now."
Indirect: The teacher advised the boys not to make a noise there then. — said to→advised, Don't→not to, here→there, now→then. Ek line mein chaar rules ek saath! 💪

⚡ Quick Revision
  • 4 changes: Pronoun (SON) → Tense (backshift) → Time/Place words → Conjunction.
  • Reporting verb Past ho toh backshift; Present/Future ho toh tense same.
  • Universal truth & habitual facts ka tense kabhi nahi badalta.
  • Statement = that | Wh-question = wh-word | Yes/No = if/whether | Order = to / not to.
  • Question ko statement order mein likho, '?' hatao; reporting verb 'asked'.

Roz 5 sentences convert karo aur har ek mein chaaron rules tick karo. Practice se yeh topic itna easy ho jaayega ki exam mein aap muskura kar likhoge. Best of luck, bhaavi shikshakon! 🙏
