Précis Writing: Shrink a Passage Without Losing Marks
Précis = ek passage ko one-third length me, apne shabdon me, sabhi main points ke saath likhna. Description nahi — concentrated essence.
The method (4 steps)
- Read twice — theme aur main points samjho; har paragraph ka central idea note karo.
- Underline key points; examples, repetition, quotations hatao.
- Draft in your own words, third-person, past tense, ~1/3 length.
- Give a short title & write the word count.
📝 Example300-word passage → précis ~100 words. Drop "for example…", drop repeated ideas, keep only the backbone.
Golden rules
Always indirect speech & third person; one paragraph; no personal opinion; no new information; no copying full sentences.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- Length galat (too long/short) = marks cut. Aim strictly ~1/3.
- Direct copy of lines = penalty — apne shabd use karo.
- Examples & figures précis me nahi aate.
