Prepositions: Beat the Most Confusing Ones

Prepositions English ke woh chhote-chhote pul (bridges) hain jo nouns ko baaki sentence se jodte hain — in, on, at, by, for, since, of... aur inhi mein aspirants sabse zyada marks gawate hain. Kyun? Kyunki prepositions Hindi se directly translate nahi hote. Hindi mein hum kehte hain 'subah mein', lekin English mein in the morning... ruko, actually in the morning sahi hai, par 'at night' galat-galat lagta hai! Confusing? Bilkul. Is article mein hum sabse confusing pairs ko ek-ek karke clear karenge, taaki PGT/TGT/KVS ki exam mein aap confidently tick kar sakein.

Time Prepositions: AT, ON, IN

Time ke liye teen main prepositions hain, aur inka ek clean logic hai — chhote se bade ki taraf:

• AT — exact points of time. at 5 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at dawn.
• ON — days aur dates. on Monday, on 15th August, on my birthday, on Sunday morning.
• IN — longer periods. in the morning, in June, in 2024, in summer, in the 90s.

Place Prepositions: AT, ON, IN (Again!)

Wahi teen, par place ke liye:

• AT — specific point/location. at the bus stop, at the door, at home, at the top.
• ON — surface ke upar. on the table, on the wall, on the floor, on page 10.
• IN — enclosed space ke andar. in the room, in the box, in Delhi, in India.

Tip: in the car but on the bus/train/plane — bade public transport ke liye 'on', chhoti car ke liye 'in'. Yeh exam favourite hai.

SINCE vs FOR — The Classic Trap

Dono 'time' ke liye, lekin:

• SINCE — starting point batata hai (kab se). since 2010, since Monday, since morning.
• FOR — duration batata hai (kitni der). for three years, for two hours, for a week.

Dono usually present perfect ya present perfect continuous ke saath aate hain. I have lived here since 2015. I have lived here for ten years.

BY vs UNTIL/TILL — Deadline vs Continuity

• BY — kisi deadline tak (us point tak ho jana chahiye). Finish it by 5 p.m. (5 baje tak khatam.)
• UNTIL/TILL — kisi point tak continue. Wait until 5 p.m. (5 baje tak ruko.)

BETWEEN vs AMONG

Purana rule: between do cheezon ke liye, among teen ya zyada ke liye. Divide it between the two brothers. / Divide it among the four friends. (Note: 'between' multiple distinct items ke liye bhi chalta hai jab har ek se relation ho — an agreement between five nations — par exam ke liye basic rule pakka rakhiye.)

BESIDE vs BESIDES

Yeh ek letter ka farak bada blunder ban jaata hai:

• beside = ke bagal mein (next to). Sit beside me.
• besides = ke alawa (in addition to). Besides English, she teaches Hindi.

Prepositions After Specific Words

Kuch verbs/adjectives apna fixed preposition lekar aate hain — inhe ratna padta hai. Sabse common exam wale:

• good at, bad at (skill) — good at maths.
• angry with (a person) but angry at/about (a thing).
• married to, not married with.
• depend on, rely on, insist on.
• different from, afraid of, interested in.
• congratulate someone on, not congratulate for.
• composed of, capable of, fond of.

Prepositions ko ek hi din mein nahi, thode-thode roz pakdiye. Ek trick — jab bhi koi new verb/adjective padhein, uske saath ka preposition bhi note kar lein (jaise 'depend on').
