Narration — Direct ⇄ Indirect Speech

✍️ Grammar  ·  ⏱️ 7 min read  ·  Updated June 2026

Three changes, every time

  1. Tense backshift (when the reporting verb is past): present → past, past → past perfect, will → would, can → could, may → might.
  2. Pronouns change to match the reporter's point of view (I → he/she, we → they, my → his/her).
  3. Time & place words shift (see table).
DirectIndirect
nowthen
todaythat day
tomorrowthe next day
yesterdaythe previous day
herethere
this / thesethat / those
agobefore
last nightthe previous night

हिन्दी: reporting verb past है तो tense एक कदम पीछे जाता है; pronoun और time-word बदलते हैं; universal truth नहीं बदलती।

Match the reporting verb to the sentence type

Sentence typeReporting verb / connectorExample (indirect)
Statementsaid / told + thatHe said that he was tired.
Yes/No questionasked + if / whetherShe asked if I was ready.
Wh- questionasked + wh-wordHe asked where I lived.
Command / requestordered / requested / told + to + V1He told me to wait.
Exclamation / wishexclaimed that / wished thatShe exclaimed that it was wonderful.
⚠️ In reported questions the word order becomes that of a statement — no helping-verb inversion, no question mark. ✗ "He asked where did I live." ✓ "He asked where I lived."

When the tense does NOT shift

Keep the tense unchanged when: (1) the reporting verb is in the present/future ("He says he is busy"), or (2) the clause is a universal truth / habitual fact ("The teacher said that honesty is the best policy").
