Why comprehension is free marks

Unlike grammar or literature, comprehension needs no memory — every answer is hidden in the passage itself. With a method, it is the most reliable scoring section in the paper.

The 5-step method

Read the questions first (not the options) — so you know what to hunt for.
Skim the passage once for the gist — what is it about, what is the tone?
Go question by question, returning to the passage. Locate the keyword from the question and read the sentence around it.
Answer only from the text — never from your own opinion or outside knowledge.
Eliminate options that are too extreme, partly true, or not stated.

⚠️ The most common trap is the “partly correct” option — true in real life but not stated in the passage. If it is not in the text, it is wrong.

Question types and how to handle them

Type	How to answer
Factual / detail	Find the exact line — the answer is stated directly.
Inference	What the text implies — stay close to the text; do not over-guess.
Vocabulary-in-context	Replace the word with each option in the sentence — pick the one that keeps the meaning.
Tone / attitude	Look at the writer’s adjectives — are they positive, critical, neutral?
Title / main idea	The one idea that covers the whole passage, not just one paragraph.

💡 For vocabulary questions, decide the meaning from the sentence first, then look at the options — don’t let a familiar dictionary meaning mislead you.
